The 76th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China was marked in Johannesburg on Monday evening with a reception hosted by the Chinese Consul General, Mr. Pan Qingjiang, at the Maslow Hotel. The event drew senior government officials, members of parliament, mayors, business leaders, academics, media representatives and the Chinese community in South Africa, all gathered to celebrate the milestone and reflect on the strong ties between China and South Africa.

In his address, Pan highlighted China’s achievements over the past seven decades, noting its rise as the world’s second-largest economy, the largest manufacturer and a key driver of global trade. He said China’s growth of 5.3% in the first half of 2025 was evidence of resilience despite global pressures, adding that the country’s focus is now on high-quality growth, sustainability and innovation. He reminded guests that China’s progress is rooted not only in economic advancement but also in the pursuit of cultural and ethical development. Guests were also treated to the screening of Blue Planet Outside the Window, the first Chinese space documentary filmed in 8K ultra-high definition, showcasing the country’s aerospace progress.

Turning to international affairs, Pan spoke about the turbulence facing the world, including rising unilateralism, protectionism and conflict. He stressed that China remains committed to peace and multilateralism, recalling the recent Global Governance Initiative launched by President Xi Jinping, which calls for fairness, equality, respect for sovereignty and practical cooperation. He also reminded the audience of China’s sacrifices during the Second World War and said the lessons of history must guide nations toward lasting peace.

Pan underscored the depth of relations between China and South Africa, describing them as “comrades plus brothers.” He said China was committed to working with South Africa to strengthen political trust, expand trade and cultural exchanges, and promote development that benefits both nations. He welcomed the zero-tariff treatment announced by President Xi for products from 53 African countries and encouraged South Africa to seize the opportunity. He also expressed China’s full support for South Africa’s G20 Presidency, saying the Johannesburg summit would carry the hopes of the Global South in shaping global governance.

Adding to the evening’s spirit of partnership, Gauteng MEC for Education, Sports, Arts and Culture, Matome Chiloane, praised China’s consistent support for South Africa’s development and said the relationship between the two nations was not only strategic but people-centered. He highlighted the growing opportunities in education and youth exchange programmes, noting that South Africa’s future generations stand to gain from strengthened cooperation with China. On behalf of Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, he said the province values its twinning agreements with Chinese regions and looks forward to further collaboration in trade, culture and innovation.

Free State Premier Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae, represented at the event by MEC Ntombizanele Sifuba, commended the enduring friendship between China and South Africa, describing it as one built on solidarity and shared aspirations for progress. She said the Free State was eager to deepen partnerships with Chinese provinces in agriculture, skills development and cultural exchange, adding that such initiatives would bring tangible benefits to local communities and contribute to South Africa’s broader growth agenda.

Pan concluded his remarks by thanking all partners and friends for their continued support of China-South Africa relations. He encouraged members of the Chinese community in South Africa to contribute to the prosperity of both nations and reaffirmed his office’s commitment to offering high-quality consular services. Proposing a toast, he wished for the prosperity of China and South Africa, the health and happiness of all present, and a joyful Mid-Autumn Festival for the Chinese community.
