The Metropolitan College hosted a heartfelt and impactful Career Guidance Day, giving Grade 9 learners a clearer view of the journeys that lie ahead as they prepare to enter the Further Education and Training phase in Grade 10.
Teachers and school leadership expressed pride in presenting a day that was “well prepared for, well presented, and well represented.” The event highlighted the importance of choosing subjects that align with a learner’s passion and future career path a decision that can shape their whole life.
Principal of The Metropolitan College reaffirmed the significance of the day, saying: “This is a crucial moment to align subjects with the career path one has chosen. As an annual event, we are glad to have professionals coming to address learners and highlight the value of choosing careers wisely.”
Healthcare professionals took centre stage, reminding students that the world needs people who are willing to serve others with empathy and purpose. Sister Getrude from Unjani Clinic encouraged learners to consider the wide range of careers in health from nursing to administration, from patient support to community wellness.
She emphasised that success in healthcare is not only about skills but the heart behind the work: “It’s about serving people. It’s about caring. It’s about showing love.” She added that passion must lead purpose in every profession: “If you cannot put people first with passion for what you do, you will not be able to truly serve.”
Sister Getrude also explained how Unjani Clinic plays a critical role in communities by supporting government health facilities that are often overwhelmed. The clinic provides affordable services close to where people live reminding learners that health careers change lives right at home.
Phindiwe from La Rochelle brought in another valuable perspective, highlighting opportunities within healthcare support systems and private maternity facilities. She noted that even outside traditional medical roles, there is strong demand for careers in administration, reception, information management, and guiding patients through their health journeys.
Both speakers reassured learners that they are not alone as they choose their pathways. They are supported by professionals and by their school, which values giving learners accurate insight, guidance, and encouragement.
The day ended with gratitude from the school for every stakeholder who contributed their time and wisdom. The Metropolitan College believes strongly in preparing learners not just to pass grades, but to step boldly into futures where they are confident, skilled, and inspired.
“It has been an honour to have professionals who take a stand for young people,” a staff representative shared. “Today has forever changed lives.”
