Midnight Transformer Fire Contained in Johannesburg CBD, No Injuries Reported

A fast response from Emergency Management Services (EMS) firefighters prevented a potentially devastating building fire in the Johannesburg CBD in the early hours of this morning.

At approximately 03:00, emergency crews were dispatched to the corner of Bree and Harrison Streets following reports of a ground-floor fire in a 16-storey mixed-use building containing both residential apartments and commercial spaces.

Initial assessments indicate the blaze started on the ground floor and, crucially, did not spread to the upper floors, avoiding what could have been a major inner-city disaster.

Firefighters immediately launched fire suppression operations and successfully extinguished the flames. EMS teams remain on scene carrying out damping-down operations to prevent re-ignition, while light smoke is still visible from the affected area.

A large electrical transformer located on the ground floor is suspected to be the source of the fire. However, the exact cause of the incident will only be confirmed once a full fire investigation is conducted after emergency operations conclude.

No injuries have been reported, and all occupants are safe. All transformer-related enquiries will be handled by City Power, the entity responsible for electricity infrastructure in the city.

Firefighters battle a large nighttime blaze, directing high-pressure water streams at a burning commercial building as smoke and red emergency lights fill the street.
